Tretinoin is an antineoplastic retinoid used in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), classified as FAB-M3 leukemia. It acts by binding to retinoic acid receptors and promoting differentiation and maturation of abnormal promyelocytes into normal blood cells. Tretinoin specifically targets leukemic cells carrying the PML-RARα fusion protein associated with APL. This mechanism helps induce remission and restore normal hematopoiesis without directly causing cytotoxic cell destruction.
